H. Carter (Walworth Club), A. Johnston, C. Thompson, J. Brown, and J. Saver (Darlington Railway Athletic Club), T. Bewick, twice (Raby and Staindrop Club). 25 yards : H. Johnson and C. Thompson (Darlington Railway .Athletic). The shooting during the season was below the average, owing to many of the clubs having lost many of their younger members and best shots ; and great credit is due to the clubs who were able to complete all their matches, only one club, Evenwood, being unable to complete. .All the clubs have ranges of 25 yards with the exception of the Rabv and Staindrop Club, which is 20 yards, and all clubs in their matches against the Raby Club shot at the 20 yards' range. Each club shoots on its own range and the match cards are forwarded to their opponents. The number of members per team to shoot is seven and five to count, but where teams are weak and difficult to get together the Committee decided four could shoot and an average of the four taken as the fifth score to count, so as to keep as many clubs going as possible and prevent them dropping out of the League. This has been the means of keeping the weaker clubs as members of the League. The League Committee at the general meeting again decided to hold the annual " Bisley " this year, as it was generally thought that if this meeting were allowed to drop it would be a difficult m a t t e r t o r e - s t a r t i t i n t h e f u t u r e , a n d r a t h e r t h a n h a v e t h i s t a k e place the Committee decided to have a much-curtailed programme so that the " Bisley " could be carried on for another year. The "Bisley" took place on Saturday, June 22nd, T918, con fined to the League clubs, on the splendid ranges of the Darlington Railway Athletic Club, Brinkburn Road, Darlington, kindly lent for the occasion by this club. The weather was rather unfavourable for good shooting, a strong, gusty, left wind blowing, which had a great effect at the 50 and too yards' ranges, and with occasional slight showers throughout the day. The scoring was below the average for this annual event. The attendance, as fully expected, was only about half of the previous year and only about a quarter of the 1916 " Bisley," owing to the depletion -of clubs through members being on military service. Onlv two individual events took place. No. 1 for members averaging 66 or under in the W inter League matches, and the other (No. 2) the Teesdale Individual Championship for all m.embers. The Individual Championship was won by Mr. E. Watson, of the W'alworth Club, with a .score of 198 (H.P..S. 210), and the Cup for this event was presented at the end of the meeting by the President and donor, Mr. A. R. G. Thompson, of Walworth Hall, who takes a great interest in the League's affairs. .A sharp shooter contest at breakable discs at 50 yards and unlimited pool shoots at 25, 50, and 100 yards also took place. ' I ■'HE ang-le to the horizontal at which the bomb I strikes the ground (z), or, in gunnery parlance, X the angle of descent, is calculated by the formula :— (it T a n g e n t z = — . . . ( ^ ) Taking the case of a bomb dropped from an aero plane travelling at 82 miles per hour (or 120 feet per second), at a height of 5,400 feet, our data are :— t = 18.3 seconds (from Table I.) ; V = 120 f.s. ; and g = 32.19 f.s.s. And, using formula (5), we obtain ;— 32.19x18.3 Ta n g e n t 2 = 120 = 4 - 9 1 2 = 78.5 degrees. Table V. contains the results of this and similar calculations to include travelling velocities from V=3o f.s. to V=i50 f.s. Stkiking Enekgy . A table of striking energies in foot-pounds is akso useful. Letting w = the weight of the bomb in pounds and S.E. = the striking energy in foot-pounds, we have:— ivv- S.E. = or, in foot-tons. S.E. = ivv- (6) (7) 2_r/ X 2,240 Table VI. contains factors by which the striking energy may be obtained readily when the weight and the striking velocity (v) of the bomb are known. Putting V- A = - . . . . ( 8 ) 2g in formula (6) we have S . E . = X w(9) so that we have but to multiply the appropriate value of .V by the weight of the bomb in pounds to get the striking energy in foot-pounds. Table VI. is tabulated for incre ments of ic f.s. from f=io f.s. to t; = 1,200 f.s. (For any intermediate striking velocity an interpolation may be made.) Suppose a bomb weighing loolbs. to be dropf>ed from an aircraft travelling at 80 feet per second at a height of 5>700 feet. The striking velocity of the bomb falling in vacuo would be, by Table IV., 610 feet per second. O u r d a t a a r e : — IV = too lbs. ; t ' = 6 i o f . s . Taking the value of A from Table \T. corresponding to t ' = 6 i o f . s . , w e o b t a i n : — S.E.=Air = 5 . 7 7 9 X 1 0 0 = 577.900 foot-pounds = 258 foot-tons. For a light bomb weighing 61bs., falling under the same conditions, we have :— S-E.= 5,779x6 = 34,674 foot-pounds = 154 foot-tons. Even very small bodies have considerable striking energy at moderate heights. .4. shrapnel bullet weighing one-fortieth of a pound if dropped from an Aircraft travelling at 61 miles per hour (90 feet per second) at a height of only 3,000 feet would have a striking velocity (see Table IV.) of 450 f.s., so that, using Table VL, we hat'e I S . E . = 3 , I 4 5 X — 40 = 784 foot-pounds. This is considered more than sufficient to put a living target out of action. Next month we shall proceed to discuss the motion of the falling bomb under actual conditions, that is, when the resistance offered by the atmosphere is taken into account. 4 POST PR EE Orders for "The Rifleman" in quantities of more ■ t h a n t w o d o z e n c o p i e s w i l l b e s e n t P o s t F r e e .
