" XV.—THE GRADUATION OF RIFLE SIGHTS; THE ALLOWANCE FOR VARYING ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS AND TRAVEL OF TARGET ; DRIFT. clewT'.ions we are in a po.silion to describe the curAC of the ramp. If If is the elevation in minutes of angle, L nie Icnytli of the sight base in inches, then the dimension I BC. which we will call M, 'S given in inches by I L E i M = . • ■ ( 6 3 ) T "^HE backsight of a rille is the index to the ranging powers of the weapon under normal conditions. The principle of all open rille sights is the s.amc. ii\' means of ;i gi-.-idu-atcd scale of ranges engraved on the leaf of the backsight, when we look along- the line of sight to the target through the back sight and the foresight we are gi\ing the necessary tan gent elevation for the required range. Th.c sights of the short Lee-Enfield r- ■, ■ .. sir.ryle design and may be described os typical of ..le 00-;.; - tern. The foresight consists of a plate do ..-'.L-d ii'ito the foresight block at right angles to the \ s of the barrel, so tha.t later;d adjustment may be eifeci.d. t he backsight, suitably attached to the barrel, ccmsists in the main of a leaf, a. slide, and a ramp. Tive toja side of the leaf is graduated ; on the left side by lines repre senting excry 23 yards of range between 200 yards and 2,000 yards, and on the right side by lines corresponding to cxery hundred yards of range. By pushing the slide along the leaf until an index line, which is engraved on the slide, corresponds to the required range as marked on the leaf, the necessary elevation is given. The slide is held on the right side of the leaf by a fine-adjustment worm wheel engaging screw thread notches. The cir- CLimference.of the worm wheel is divided by ten thumb nail notches, the distance between any two consecutive notches representing 5 vards of range. By means of a c a t c h o n t h e l e f t s i d e t h e w o r m w h e e l m a y b e r e l e a s e d from the screw thread notches and rapid motion given to the slide. A windgauge is fitted to the rear end of the leaf, and carries the U-shaped notch of the backsight. Let us suppose that the backsight of the short rille has to be engraved to agree with the elevations we found by calculation in Chapter XI. In Figure XVIII., the line -AC repre.sents the distance between the backsight and the foresight. .VC is known as the sight base (it is some times called the sight railiiis). Now the graduation on the backsight corresponding to an angle of elevation, E, must be such that when the slide is pushed along the ramp the U-shaped notch of the backsight must be raised to B. Looking at the foresight at A through the U of the backsight at B we aim at the target at O. The angle BAG is then equal to the angle KAO and also, when no jump has to be taken into account, ecjual to the angle E necessary to give the trajectory .APO for the desired range AO. What we have to find, then, is the dimension of BC. Given this for the various 343® The elevations found in Chapter XI. were Angles of Projection. The angle of projection is the angle made bv the axis of the ritle and the line of sight as the bullet lei 2S Ac ritle, so that it includes the jump. The sight ' - tl,ei . .ore to be made to correspond to the tangent t on wliich is tiie angle made by the axis of the rifle the line of sight before the rifle is fired. In the case of the Mark \TL bullet we will assume jump to be —4.5 minutes. If we consider the •Angle of Projection of 33.0 minutes which we calculated in Chapter XI. for a range of 700 yards, the Angle of U i and the Tangent Elevation is therefore 33.0 _ ■4-5 = 37-5 minutes, tind calculating for a sight base of 20 inches we haxe, bv formula (('13) 20x37.5 M = 3438 = 0.218 inch. In the following table is given a summary of this and similar calculations for the other elevations : M. inch. 0.044 0.063 0.084 o. 1 10 o. 141 0.177 0.218 o. 265 0.318 0.378 0.44.S 0.518 \\ c have obtained in this wav the values of M, 01, referring to Figure XVHL, the actual heights at which Angle of Angle of T angent Range. There is no necessity lor us to concern ourselves with anything more than this. The leaf, slide and ramp of the backsight are simply a convenient mechankal combination which, when set according to the graduated scale of ranges on the leaf, automatically rai.ses B.to the necessary value of .M, and makes the angle B.^C equal to the desired tangent elevation. Ef fect of Lengthening the Sight Base. When it is permissible the advantage gained by the adoption of as long a sight base as possible is sufficiently obvious to make it desirable. The service rifle has what may be termed a short sight base. If we were to increase it by 50 per cent.—making it, say, 30 inches instead of 20 inches with the short rifle—we should bring the back sight so far towards the butt that open sights would be impossible. The adoption of a long sight base, such as 30 or even 35 inches, is only practicable where aperture sights are used. If we consider a 30 inch sight ba.se in the case of the short rifle, it is to be noticed in formula (63) that an j increase of 50 per cent, in L would imply a 50 per cent, increase in the values of M given in the table. .'\t a range of 1,000 yards M would be 0.567 inch for a 30 inch sight base in comparison with 0.378 inch for a 20 inch sight base; and at 1,100 yards range 0.668 inch for a 30 inch sight ba.se to compare with 0.445 i"ch for a 20 inch sight base. That is to say, the difference in the dimensions of M for the two ranges mentioned would be:— Dif ference in dimension of M for 1,000 and 1,100 yards Sight base. range. 30 inch ... ... ... o. loi inch 20 inch ... ... ... 0.067 inch Now on a target at a range of 100 yards these differences in the dimension of M both correspond to 12.1 inches; but the 33 per cent, increase in the length of M for the 30 inch base over the 20 inch base would permit of finer adjustment of aim on the sight. " The disadvantage of placing the backsight very far to the rear, in order to obtain a long sight radius," says " The Text Book of Small Arms," 1909 (page 109), " is that a great strain is thrown upon the lens of the eye in its efforts to focus rapidly the two sights and the object in turn upon the retina. The clo.ser the backsight is to the eye, the greater is the required change of focus." WiNDGAUGE. If L is the length of the sight base in inches, then the dimension N in inches corresponding to D minutes deflection on the windgtiugc is given by :— LD N = . . . ( 6 4 ) 3438 . In Chapter XIV. we found that to correct for a lateral wind component of 15 f.s. at :i range of 1,251 yards with the Mark VII. bullet it was necessary to put 18.1 minutes deflection on the windgtiugc. With ;i 20 inch sight base we woiild have then by formula (64):— 2 0 X 1 8 . 1 . . N = . ■ ' ' 3 4 3 8 = o. 105 inch. C o n d i t i o n s V a r y i n g f r o m t h e N o r m a l . We have remarked that the backsight is graduated ■ .K 0 for normal conditions which are assumed to be;— .1. Barometric pressure of 30 inches at sea level. 2. Thermometric reading of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Ab.sence of wind. 4. Horizontal line of sight. In Chapter XIII. we saw in what manner the eleva- tioii was affected by firing at high angles of sight, and in Chap.ter XIV. we discussed the effect of wind upon shooting, so that we need now only cotisider varying atmospheric conditions as indicated by i and 2 above. " Musketry Regulations " gives the following handy rules for correcting the effect of readings of the barometer and thermometer when they differ from the normal. Barometer.—For every inch the barometer rises or falls above or below 30 inches, add, or deduct, ii yards per 100 yards of range. Thcrmovicter.—For every degree which the tempera ture rises or falls above or below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, deduct, or add, i/io yard for each hundred yards of range. WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UK173 and thermomctric variations in calculating is made in the ballistic coefficient, which is express-^d as a- C = nkd- wherc k is the factor depending ujjon the barometer and thermometer. .-Vn inspection of the table of k in Chapter XII. would prove that the following rules also are true:— Barometer.—For c\ery inch the barometer rises, or falls, above or l>elow 30 inches the ballistic coefficient is decreased, or increased, by 3.33 per cent. Thermometer.—For 10 degrees rise, or fall, in thcrmometric reading from the normal of 60 degrees Faiirenheit, the Ixillistic coefficient is increased, or decreased, by 2 per cent. Figure XIII. of Chapter XII. gives us a convenient means of testing our rules for the Mark VII. bullet, faking a 10 per cent, increa.se and decrea.se in the value of the ballistic coefficient we may read from the curve :— \'alue of C. Range (feet). 0.427 (10 per cent, increase) 3,444 0 . 3 8 8 ( n o r m a l ) . . . . . . . . . 3 , 3 0 0 0.349 (10 per cent, decrease) ... 3,138 so th:it, taking an average of the effects on range of an increa.sc and decrease of ballistic coefficient we may sav that a 10 per cent, \ariation in C is equivalent to an alteration in range of 50 yards at a range of 1,100 vards. Testing our rules we proceed as follows :— B a r o m e t e r. — . \ n i n c h v a r i a t i o n o f b a r o m e t e r i s equivalent to 3.33 per cent, variation in C so that it is equal t<j 17 yards. The " Muskctr\' Regulations " rule gives i-l- yards for every 100 yards of range which is also 17 yards at 1,100 yards range. Thermometer.—Ten degrees variation e)f thermo- metric reading is equivalent to 2 per cent, \ariation in C so that it is equal to 10 yards of range. Tlie " Musketrv Regulations" rule gives i/io yard for each hundred yards of range; again in agreement with our calculation. If t be the time of flight of the bullet in .seconds, and s the speed at which the target is mo\ing_in feet per second, then S the distance in feet which the target will have mo\'ed whilst the bullet is travelling to the target will be given by :— S = . s f . . . . So that in calculating the correction for the travel of the target we should allow, say, 0.042 second to be added to the time of flight of the bullet in the air. In Chapter XI. we found the time of flight for the Mark ATI. bullet for a range of 1,000 yards to be 2.07 .seconds. .Allowing for the time occupied by the opera tion of firing gives f = 2.112, and calculating by formula (65) for a target mo^•ing at the " double," we have S = 8 . 8 x 2 . 1 1 2 = 1 8 . 6 f e e t . To turn this distance into minutes of angle of deflec tion to put on the sight we ha\e the formula :— 1146 S D = . . . ( 6 6 ) R w h e r e D i s t l i e d e fl e c t i o n i n m i n u t e s , S t h e d i s t a n c e travelled by the target in feet, and R the range in yards. By formula (06) we have, then :— 1146 X 18.6 D = 1000 , = 2 1 . 3 m i n u t e s . Drift. I lie lateral displacement from the \ertical plane passing through the axis of the rifle which the bullet suffers is known as drift. .All cylindro-ogival projectiles, among them bullets with round and pointed heads, are affected in the same way—the direction of the drift is the same as the direction of the twist of rifling. Thus, in the case of the Seri ice rifle, tlie twist of the rifling is to the left, so that the bullet fired from it drifts to the left. The amount of drift increases with the range and also with the elevation (except at very high elevations, ultimately disappearing firing in the vertical). At ex treme ranges drift increa.ses very rapidly. AA^ith the same bullet and cartridge, the sharper the twist of rifling the greater the drift. AAath two bullets of identical weight and shape of head, varying only in length, the shorter bullet drifts farther than the longer. Drift is not very considerable at moderate ranges and no allowance is made for it on the sights of the Service rifle. "Musketry Regulations" says:—"The deflection due to drift at distances below 1,000 yards is negligible. At 1,500 yards it may be regarded as about 7 fWt." {To he continued.) WWW.RIFLEMAN.ORG.UK174 .
