This comprehensive and revealing article comprises a highly detailed account of the development of the gun wharves and Ordnance stores around Woolwich into the Royal Arsenal as it became known.

The piece was published in the journal of the Newcomen Society for the study of the history of Engineering and technology - Transactions Vol. XXXII 1959-1960.

The article was authored by Brigadier Oliver Hogg as a lecture to the society. He was well known for his many books on the subjects of the history of artillery and the Royal Arsenal itself. He also wrote of his time working at the Enfield Royal Small Arms Factory and at Woolwich, an unpublished book entitled "A Vanished World".

Another piece of his related detail of the origin of the military ordnance mark known as the "Crow's Foot", and more recently as The Broad Arrow.
